My take on runs is that there's different styles, and it's good to have a few options. Hollywood Strings I use for the runs patches. I actually use CSS to calibrate other strings that need balancing. It's nice to know that when I'm composing, if something is off, I can usually assume that at least CSS is doing what it should be doing, and I can cross that off my list and focus on making other instruments play well with CSS. Balancing an entire orchestra is a massive unweildy task. It's just solid, dependable, and things work as they should. In my opinion, one of the most underrated qualities of CSS is that it is well-balanced and scripted. CSS spiccatos are good for a tighter, more discrete sound. For spiccatos, I often use Fluid Shorts 1, which stand up to repetition better and flow more naturally. The other 15% it can handle as well, but I have specialized tools that do a little better. I actually own CSS, Soaring Strings, and Hollywood Strings Gold.ĬSS is at the core of my strings. Can someone elaborate on which of these I should be getting for this need of mine, or if there is something else in the same price range (max $500) capable of the task?Ĭlick to expand. You mix different libraries. It may be that Spitfire Chamber Strings also has a nice fast legato, though. So, it seems to me that this is the only strings library worth getting. Am I wrong? Do I simply need more experience?Īnyway, from what I've heard, and that is admittedly not a huge array of libraries, only Cinematic Studio Strings has a fully capable fast legato. I'm very much hoping that someone will correct me and say that I can do things like 16th note legatos at 120BPM with HZS, but it seems to me that it just isn't possible. IMO, if you don't have a fast legato then you're just not a legitimate strings library. I can understand it with A1, since it's a much older product, but I expected more from HZS. It could very well be that I am simply not experienced enough in programming these things, but it certainly seems to me that if you want anything even approaching a fast legato, then neither of these libraries is even close to being up to the task. However, I am rather bitterly disappointed with the legato in both products. I also splurged a bit and also bought HZ Strings, thinking I would certainly need that big sound, and that such an expensive strings library would have everything I needed. So I'm still pretty new to using sample libraries, and not knowing what I needed I chose to go with Albion One since it sounded like a safe bet after reading up on everything.
